Hoping to do a road trip at least once a year. This one for 2023 is one week, all four of us, which makes coordinating the timing difficult. It’s a short one towards KL, before turning back. We visited Bukit Mor on our return leg.
Previous visits to Bukit Mor had been memorable. It’s a pleasant climb, not too tough yet not without a little scramble at some points. The plan is to arrive the night before, so as to make it for sunrise hike. We stayed at a homestay in Muar, a 30-minute drive to Bukit Mor in Parit Jawa.
The trailhead can be found in Google “Bukit Mor trailhead”. In the dark, however, it’s not very visible, as it’s seems like a small turn off the main road into the plantation. No signage along the road. Driving slowly between the trees, the trail map is sighted slightly ahead.

A steep incline welcomed us at the trailhead. We are to follow the markers through A-G towards the sunrise viewing spot, then down via H. Within 30 minutes we arrived at the first check point, just before B. Trails are clear, and even though there are many forks, signs and directions are clearly marked. The steeper sections have ropes for extra support.

After G, the trail opened up, full visibility of the sky. Sky’s lighting up slowly, just in time for catching the Sun!

Took a while to figure out where the sunrise viewpoint is, towards the left up scramble up some huge boulders. Two ways to the top, the one further one is the gentler one. But the steeper one is quite doable too.

From here it’s just finding the best spot and waiting for the moment. It’s a cloudy morning though, no wow sunrise. But the view into the distant was great and the air fresh!

We saw a few more huge boulders at the far end but didn’t venture any further. Other local hikers who arrived later were beginning to make their way down, when the skies started to turn grey. We decided to follow their advice, after all it’s their territory and they should know better. Started our descend via H at 8am and back to trailhead within an hour.

Bonus – spotted dusky leaf monkeys! So many of them! We had seen two at Lambak nearer the resort, and this is my first at Bukit Mor. Their white patches around the eyes are so adorable, like wearing white spectacles!

Breakfast is porridge at Mei Ting, a short drive from the trailhead.
