We went back to Gunung Datuk again. Twice, within the same month. The first time with my hubby and today with a few friends. This trip, we were supposed to hike 3 gunungs over 3 days. Unfortunately, the weather’s not on our side. Plus we had 3 “casualties” out of 5. I guess the others will be for next time!
Datuk’s trailhead is easy to get to. I like that there’s very clean bathing facilities and toilets right here, and a shop selling drinks and snacks. Registration is RM20/pax for foreigners. Last entry into the park at 1pm – I saw the Pakcik stopping some hikers who arrived late.
For this post, decided to include photos taken from both hikes, since they somewhat cover different areas. Here for the video clip

At 855m elevation and 2070m distance, it’s a steep ascent for the most part. After the huts, there is an initial short descent, after which the trail gets steep and rocky, with ropes all the way to CP1. On our previous hike, this section was dry but the loose gravel were slippery. Today, the soil seems more compacted from the rain last few days, but muddy. It seemed easier though, on the wetter trail.

Between CP1 and CP2, the slope was gentle. Lots of interaction with monkeys today. They obviously enjoyed the cool morning too, calling out and singing to one another! They sounded so near, if only they would show their faces! Spent a long time trying to spot them – but no luck. Through the trail, lots of mushroom on display too! I’ve never seen such huge clusters of them!

After CP2, the bigger rocks, ladders and extensive roots network. Gradient intensified again. It wasn’t long before we arrive at the base of a group of huge boulders. The final steps up a few series of ladders, and finally throwing out our arms, holding the Gunung Datuk sign board – checked in!

Regardless of how many times we are revisiting, one never cease to wow at that breathtaking sight! Now all we need is to pause and take in the energies of Nature, admiring the all-round view, melting away any negativity and tiredness. We spent a good hour at the peak, enjoying the moment and the many photo points.

On our descent, the rain, as forecasted. Light at first, then the skies opened up without mercy as we were on our final stretch of steep descent. The rain came fast and furious, decided to abandon any effort to waterproof either my gear or myself. By now it’s pouring waterfalls, I could feel water gushing into my ankle high shoes. I was totally focused on my steps, as the waters had obscured the path. I’m thankful that I’m wearing a hat, the brim keeping water away from my glasses!
